Notes: The names Alex Hamilton (171) and Bryan Towers (160) pretty much became household over the years, but the consistently successful duo has flown the nest. Also gone to graduation are Adam Berkey (215) and Dom Knapp (189). But the ’Dogs do return plenty of talent in Shelton Mack (34-7, regional qualifier), Nick Limano (22-11), Kasey Davis (19-7), Rusty Woodrow (28-15, regional qualifier), Matt Knapp (19-13), Dillon Steele (18-12) and Josh Keach (23-13, regional qualifier). Head coach Jon Frye is resisting the temptation of predictions at this point. “It’s hard to say until we pair up with competition. We’re really hungry to get out and compete. We have a lot of talent back. We have a lot of kids with some years under their belt.” Woodrow, Keach and Mack were regional qualifiers last season. “They have the experience to show the rest of the kids. Davis might have been a regional qualifier if it weren’t for injury. Across the board I think we’ll be comparable to how we were last year.” The Bulldogs finished the season just short of the Class AAA team dual finals.

Notes: The Cardinals only lost heavyweight Jimmy Podvasnik to graduation and are returning some nice talent this season. The only problem will be filling all the weights in order to stay in dual meet contention. Top returners include junior district qualifier Cody Northcott at 145, sophomore 112-pounder David Young, senior Bradley Peterson at 119, sophomore district sixth-place winner Mike Boughner at 152 and 6-6 senior heavyweight Joe McElhinney. “Right now we are preparing for the postseason,” secon-year head coach John Svirbly said. “We don’t have the numbers to focus on a dual-meet season. It would be nice to get some top finishes in the tournaments. We have a good chance of having some guys get through to the finals in all of the tournaments. The Cards are taking part in four tourneys this season, starting with Redbank Valley Dec. 28 and 29.

Notes: The Muskies will have some numbers problems this season, but as usual the wrestlers who take the mat have plenty of experience. Key returners include seniors Bill Kuhn (119, regional qualifier), Matt McElhaney (160, 17 wins), Butch Buchholz (189, returning letter-winner) and Adam Reisinger (215, two-year starter and returning letter-winner). “Those four seniors have done a nice job of being leaders and setting a good example for the younger kids,” head coach Mike Menold said. Jamestown lost Section I-AA champion Derek Roberts (145), along with Justin Harthon (140), Bryan Gearhart (152), Kevin Williams (160) and Mike Reams (285) to graduation. Last season the Muskies were 5-7 in dual meets. This year they will look to stack the bonus points to make up for forfeits. “The goal is to stay consistent year-to-year. We want to work hard to get better every day. We will have three to four forfeits every night, which will make dual meets a little bit tougher. The kids that we send out to wrestle need to keep in mind the goal to wrestle hard for six minutes.”

Notes: The Tigers were definitely one of the top Class AA teams in the area last season with a 12-2 record under Jeff Harry. Harry has now switched places with one of his assistants from 2006-07. “I feel that we should be just as good as last year, if not better,” first-year head coach Brad Dutchcot said. ’Wood placed fourth at the Harbor Creek Tournament last Saturday. Dutchcot said he has high expectations for Matt Graff, Evan Dahl, Ray Moritz, Nick Bancroft, Jeff Greathouse and Zach Seeley, all of whom placed in the top five at HC. Dahl placed first with a 6-5 decision over Mike Mishik of Harbor Creek. Key wrestlers lost to graduation include Tim Thurau, Adam Slingluff, R.J. Wright, Adam Hannold and Don Seeley.

Notes: Things are going to look quite a bit different this year for Saegertown with new head coach Jim Mullgian and the loss of Scott Stearns, Joe Duda, Mike Mitchell and Mike Sloat to graduation. Also, Kyle Crum will not be able to wrestle due to injury. However, Mulligan has been around for nine years as an assistant, and the Panthers do return lots of talent with a good crop of freshmen. Top returners include Sean Lyons, Kaleb Jonas, Chad Hunter, Tim Clark and Matt Bras. Jonas has moved up from 189 to 215 this season, and Mulligan is very impressed with his physical condition. “He’s 209, and he’s just a beast right now,” Mulligan said. of Jonas. Hunter will be at 152, and he is another wrestler to watch a year after unexpectedly turning many heads in 06-07. Senior Kyle Jeannerette, who didn’t wrestle last year, made the lineup at 140 pounds and is another guy to keep an eye on. Clark is back as a sophomore and has bumped from 119 to 135; Bras is back at 160. Freshman Matt Stearns, Scott’s younger brother, will fill in at 171. “He’s gonna be on another level than his brother,” Mulligan said. “The future’s bright, so I am really excited.” The Panthers will have a forfeit at 285 but will have a complete lineup otherwise.
