LOCK HAVEN – The Slippery Rock University football team was picked to win the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference Western Division when the league announced its annual preseason coaches poll Monday during PSAC Media Day at Lock Haven University.
The first place pick in the preseason poll marks the first time The Rock has been predicted to win the division since 1999. Despite not being picked to win the division, SRU has claimed five of the last eight division titles and has won the PSAC West six times since it was last chosen atop the preseason poll.
SRU went a perfect 7-0 in PSAC West games last year on the way to winning the division title. SRU garnered six of the eight first place votes from other coaches in the PSAC West. They were followed by California, Indiana, Mercyhurst, Edinboro, Gannon, Clarion and Seton Hill.
Defending PSAC champion West Chester was picked to win the Eastern Division with six first place votes. Shepherd, which comes over to the PSAC this season from the Mountain East Conference, was picked second with the other two first place votes. Kutztown was picked third, followed by Shippensburg, Bloomsburg, East Stroudsburg, Millersville and Lock Haven.
Note: Presidents’ Athletic Conference Media Day is Tuesday at Saint Vincent College in Latrobe.
