STONEBORO — Mercer snapped an 18-game losing streak on Saturday with a thrilling 35-33 win over Lakeview in Region 2 football action.
Brian Shevitz scored on a 25-yard run with 10:37 to play in the contest to propel the Mustangs to the win — their first since a Week 1 win against Eisenhower in 2015.
Garrett Gadsby kicked off the season with a bang for Lakeview when he took the kickoff 85 yards for a touchdown. Zac Tingley knocked through the extra point to put the Sailors up 7-0. Mercer evened the score with 4:57 to play in the first quarter when Jimmy Amon scored on a one-yard run and R.J. Carson booted the extra-point kick. But with 55 seconds left in the quarter, Gadsby completed a nine-play, 61-yard drive with a one-yard TD run of his own to give the Sailors a 13-6 lead.
Lakeview added to the lead right off the get-go in the second quarter. Isaac DeVault intercepted a pass by Dylan Hetrick and ran it back 20 yards for a touchdown and a 19-7 Sailor lead. Mercer scored two unanswered to take a 21-19 lead with 4:29 to play in the third quarter.
It was a game of cat and mouse from there.
The Sailors regained the lead with another one-yard TD run by Gadsby. Amon then scored on a 65-yard run for Mercer to take the lead before Lakeview stole it right back on a 20-yard touchdown run by Mitch Hansen as time expired in the third quarter. Lakeview went into the final quarter with a 33-28 lead.
Shevitz ended it.
Mercer outgained the Sailors 343-171 for the night. Amon finished with 180 yards on 28 carries to lead the way.
For the Sailors, Hansen had 105 yards on 12 carries.
