A former local volleyball standout has been selected to coach at the NORCECA Champions Cup.
Matt Werle, a Meadville graduate and current head coach of the Grand Canyon University men’s volleyball team, is coaching the U.S. men’s volleyball team at the tournament, which is being held Aug. 22-24 at the U.S. Olympic & Paralympic Training Center in Colorado Springs, Colo.
The tournament consists of women’s teams from the United States, Canada, Dominican Republic and Puerto Rico and men’s teams from the United States, Canada, Cuba and Puerto Rico.
Werle’s squad will be led by Cody Kessel, a former Princeton star, and Greg Petty, a Lewis University product, who have both played abroad professionally. Also on the squad are current college players Patrick Gasman (middle blocker, Hawaii) and Garrett Zolg (setter, Loyola of Chicago), outside hitters Corey Chavers and David Wieczorek, opposite hitters Michael Wexter and Ryan Moss, middle blockers Nick Amado, Blake Leeson and Matthew August, setter Matthew Yoshimoto and liberos Josh Ayzenburg and J.T. Hatch.
“My first experience with USA Volleyball took place more than 10 years ago as a player on the Junior National Team,” Werle said in a release on the USA volleyball team’s website. “We spent nearly a month in Colorado training prior the NORCECA Championships in Mexico. Things have come full circle with the return to this amazing complex and having the honor to coach this group of young men.”
Werle is being assisted by UCLA assistant coach Spencer McLachlin.
