GIRARD — Trent Wheeler scored on a 10-yard run and connected with Jaden Grubbs for the 2-point conversion to lead Cambridge Springs to a 28-26 overtime win over Girard on Friday in non-region football action at Baird Field.

The Blue Devils had a 12-7 lead after one quarter. But after a scoreless second period, the YellowJackets scored the lone touchdown of the third quarter to take a 14-12 lead and extended that advantage to eight points with a touchdown in the fourth. The Devils rallied, scoring on a four-yard TD run by Wheeler. Cambridge, again, made the 2-point conversion to tie the score at 20-20.

Girard did strike first in the overtime period, but missed the point-after-touchdown conversion. That allowed Cambridge an opportunity and Wheeler connected on both ends to give the Devils the win.

Also scoring for the Devils was Jared Taylor on a 1-yard run and Dylan Gibbons on a 21-yard pass from Wheeler in the first quarter.

Eagles fall short

OIL CITY — Conneaut came up with a big fourth-quarter rally. But the effort fell just short as Oil City held on for a 28-24 win over the Eagles on Friday in non-region football action.

Oil City and Conneaut exchanged touchdowns in the first quarter with the Oilers taking a 7-6 lead thanks to Max Latona’s point-after-touchdown kick. It was all Oil City through the next two quarters as it build a 28-6 lead heading into the final stanza. That’s when the Eagles came to life.
