WARREN — The Cathedral Prep boys golf team won its third straight Region 6 mega match of the season on Thursday, holding off second-place McDowell by three strokes, 317-320, during action at Blueberry Hills Golf Club. 

Meadville finished third with 354 strokes. 

Prep’s Evan Rowane took medalist with a 2-over-par 74. 

Meadville’s Ryan Ferry was second overall with a 76. Michael Mahoney also landed among the top 10 individuals with a score of 83. 

With the win, Prep now leads the league standings with 21 points. McDowell is second with 18. Meadville is third with 14.

Calvary earns second straight shutout

SLIPPERY ROCK — The Calvary Baptist boys soccer team’s strong start to the season continued on Thursday as the Thunder posted its second straight shutout, defeating DuBois Christian 5-0 during a game at Slippery Rock Baptist Camp. 

The game was scoreless until Caleb Mattocks rung up a goal in the 24th minute, assisted by Lucas Mattocks. Caleb Mattocks later assisted on Rhett Sanderson’s tally, making it 2-0 at the half. 

Caleb Mattocks then scored in the first minute of the second half, assisted by Camden Maynard. Lucas Mattocks scored off a pass from Ben Henry. And Jonah Wise knocked in the final tally on a penalty kick. 

Simon Jones earned the shutout in goal, making three saves. 

Now 2-0, Calvary Baptist has a week off before hosting Heritage Christian School on Sept. 6.

Scots ranked high in preseason polls

The Edinboro men’s and women’s cross country teams are among the top teams in the Atlantic Region according to the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association, which released its national and regional preseason polls on Thursday.

The Edinboro women are predicted to finish first in the USTFCCCA Division II Atlantic Region poll and 23rd nationally.

The men are ranked second in the USTFCCCA Division II Atlantic Region poll, and also appear the national rankings at No. 25.
