MILLCREEK TOWNSHIP — Add a pool record to Meadville swimmer Josh Merchbaker’s achievements this season. The Cochranton senior set the pool record in the 100 yard butterfly on Thursday during a Region 3 dual meet against McDowell.
Meadville wasn’t as fortunate in the team results as the Trojans swept the Bulldogs. McDowell won the girls race 104-71 and the boys race 101-74.
Merchbaker was victorious in the 100 fly with a time of 50.94. The mark beats he previous pool record of 52.15 set by Cathedral Prep’s RJ Rahner in 2012. Merchbaker also won the 200 individual medley (1:59.40) and swam a leg of Meadville’s winning 200 freestyle relay, joining Cody Kearns, Gabe Cummings and Daniel Button.
Cummings added a win in the 200 freestyle (1:52.42). Charlie Minor won the diving event and Braden Bosco won the 100 breaststroke (1:05.17).
For the Meadville girls, JJ Gowetski won the 200 free (1:59.23) and the 100 free (54.09). Olivia Philbrick was first in the 50 free (25.69) and 100 back (1:00.08). Maura Bloss won the 100 fly (1:02.82).
Panthers stop Bobcats
SAEGERTOWN — Saegertown celebrated Senior Night on Thursday with a big 43-29 win over Seneca that secured the Panthers’ lead atop the Region 2 standings.
The Panthers are now 9-2 overall and 8-2 in Region 2 and lead Cambridge Springs by a half-game and Maplewood by a full game.
Averie Braymer paced the Panthers with 14 points followed by Mollie Przybrowski with 10 points. Senior Dixie Kindervater chipped in with seven points.
Tigers top Bears
GUYS MILLS — Maplewood topped Union City 57-23 in Region 2 girls basketball action on Thursday.
Sadie Thomas and Izzy Eimer led four Tigers in double figures with 14 points each. Alexis Doolittle and Bailey Varndell added 10 points each.
Maplewood is now 7-3 overall and 6-2 in Region 2.
