The Calvary Baptist boys soccer team opened the 2019 season with a lopsided 10-0 victory over Bethel Christian of Erie on Tuesday in Meadville. 

An own goal by Bethel got Calvary on the board initially. 

That was soon followed by a hat trick from Caleb Mattocks, two goals each by Joseph Tyson and Gavin Rice, and single tallies by Ben Wise and Connor Dahl. 

Caleb Mattocks also had two assists on the day. Jonah Wise, Joseph Tyson, Ben Henry, Lucas Mattocks, Rhett Sanderson and Daniel Tyson all had one assists. 

Simon Jones made 12 saves while registering the clean sheet for the Thunder. 

Calvary is back in action on Thursday against DuBois Christian School at Slippery Rock Baptist Camp.

Hornets win Mega Match 

CONNEAUT LAKE — Hickory extended its lead in the Region 1 standings by winning Mega Match No. 2 in girls golf action on Tuesday at Oakland Beach Golf Club.

Kyra Woods’ medalist round of 82 helped lead the Hornets to a team score of 260. Leah Benson and McKenzie Gustas shot 89s.

Reynolds’ Alaina Harpst also shot an 89 as the Raiders finished second. 

Bella Vennare paced Conneaut with a 107. Maggie Battles was next for CASH with a 114.

Bears best Bison

WATERFORD — In a non-region nine-hole golf match, Union City beat Fort LeBoeuf 172-188 at Mound Grove Golf Course.

Josh James paced the Bears with a round of 41. Nathan DeSimone followed with a 43. A trio of Bears shot 44: Tyler Parkhurst, Keegan Hornaman and Matt Yaple. Matt Bennett had a 58.

For the Bison, Dalton Houch led the way with a 45. AJ Bazemore had a 46.

Thunder rolls to win

The Calvary Baptist girls volleyball team opened the season with a 25-6, 25-6, 25-20 victory over Bethel of Erie on Monday in Meadville. 

It was all about the serves in this one, as Sophia Puliese issued 10 aces, while Jael Brenner and Sierra Keyser tallied four each, and Kiara Baker put down a pair of non-returnables.
