Conneaut Area’s Laurynn Pelc (9) works to control the ball during a Region 5 girls soccer game against North East on Monday at Conneaut Area Senior High School. The Grapepickers scored three goals in a four-minute span in the second half on its way to a 6-1 win over the Eagles.

LINESVILLE — The North East Grapepickers girls soccer team rattled off three goals in a four-minute span of the second half. That big run helped the Grapepickers avoid an upset from the Conneaut Area Eagles.

On Monday afternoon at Conneaut Area Senior High School, the North East Grapepickers rolled past Conneaut 6-1 in a Region 5 girls soccer match.

North East is now 4-10 and 4-3 in Region 5. Conneaut drops to 1-14 and 1-5 in region.

“I think the other team just started to get to a few more balls quicker than we actually did and that was probably part of it,” said Conneaut head coach Ranetta Cyphert.

In the first half, however, Conneaut had a lot of energy and that was rewarded with a flurry of chances.

Early in the game, a Conneaut corner squeaked through the box and landed at the feet of Elisabeth Cunningham, who took a shot that went just wide to the left.

Ten minutes later, Hannah Nader had her first opportunity of the afternoon, but her shot was stopped by the North East goalkeeper.

With 12:15 left in the opening half, the Eagles finally got the first goal. The Eagles crashed the net and eventually Nader tapped the ball across the goal line for the 1-0 lead.

“I liked the aggressiveness that the girls had. We were beating (North East) to balls the entire first half of the game,” said Cyphert. “That allowed us to have a little bit more possession.”

The advantage was short-lived though. Just under six minutes later, Gracie Victory knotted things up by firing a shot past Jocelyn Denihan on the right side.

In the second half, North East began to control the play and was rewarded with 13 shots compared to just six for Conneaut. Eventually those shots turned into goals for the Grapepickers.

In the 56th minute, Tess Leonard gave North East the lead with a wide angle shot that found the net.

Just one minute later, Alexandria Damond received a through ball and got a breakaway opportunity that she hit to the left side for the 3-1 lead.

About a minute after that, Abby Penrod tapped in a goal for the trifecta.

“We had a little bit of breakdown of communication with some people, but other than that that was really what it comes down to,” said Cyphert. “(North East) became a little bit more aggressive in the second half.”

Penrod and Leonard tacked on two more goals to ensure the Grapepickers road win.

Up next, Conneaut hosts the region leader Fort LeBoeuf on Wednesday at 5 p.m. North East travels to Seneca on Thursday at 4:30 p.m.
