Richard A. Nichol Sr., 71, of Meadville died Wednesday, May 20, 2009, at Meadville Medical Center.

He was born Jan. 9, 1938, at Indiana,, Pa., a son of Arthur A. and Violet Brink Nichol. He was formerly married to Janice Harmon Nichol; she survives.

He graduated in 1956 from Stow High School, Stow, Ohio, and attended Alliance College in Cambridge Springs, earning a bachelor of business and administration degree in 1972. He also completed nursing school in Meadville in 1980.

Mr. Nichol worked as a general Manager for Dev-Tech Inc., Department of Military Affairs, Erie, and for St. Vincent and Hamot hospitals in Erie.

A military veteran, he served eight years in the U.S. Air Force during the Vietnam era, taking part in worldwide assignments and achieving top-secret crypto clearance.

He attended St. Brigid Catholic Church, Meadville.

He was a member of the American Legion, U.S. Golf Association and liked to travel and golf.

Survivors include a son, Richard A. Nichol Jr. of Meadville; one granddaughter, Guess Mae Nichol and one grandson, Wait Asec Nichol, both of Meadville; one sister, Sandra Kae Harvey and her husband, Robert, of Saegertown; five brothers, Donald Nichol and James Nichol, both of Saegertown, Robert Nichol of California, Daniel Nichol of Conneaut Lake and David Nichol of Saegertown; his former wife, Janice Harmon Nichol of Meadville; and a special friend, Jesse W. Chatfield of Coudersport.

He was preceded in death by his parents and by an infant brother, Kenneth.

Calling hours are Saturday from 1 to 3 p.m. at Hatheway-Tedesco Funeral Home and Crematory, 614 Baldwin St., Meadville, with Father Mark O’Hern, pastor of St. Brigid Church, officiating.

The funeral will be Saturday at 3 p.m. with full military honors by Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 2006 Color Guard. Interment will be in Venango Cemetery. Cremation will take place in the funeral home’s crematory.
