I give thumbs up to the school member who voted against tax abatement for the senior citizen apartment complex in Cochranton. Tax abatement is an unnecessary giveaway of tax dollars for this project or any similar project.
Senior apartment complexes are the real estate investment of the future. The aging baby boomers will increase the demand for this kind of investment. In short, this is a cash cow investment. Investors will build these projects without tax giveaways whether they are low income or not. What difference does it make to the investor who pays the rent, government or individuals?
Funding our schools, city and county services with real estate taxes is in need of an overhaul. The tax burden is falling on an ever-shrinking taxpayer base. This is one of the reasons Meadville has trouble balancing its budget.
