In a letter to a constituent, Congressman Mike Kelly explained his opposition to President Trump’s impeachment, listing “four key facts.” Let’s look at them.
The transcript of the president’s phone call with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky shows no discussion of military aid or conditions on its release.
• When Zelensky talked about buying weapons, Trump said, “I’d like you to do us a favor, though,” and talked about investigations he wanted done. Both leaders have said there was no pressure applied.
• Trump has lied more than 10,000 times, according to The Washington Post. Why believe him? Zelensky was desperate for U.S. support. Common sense would lead us to ask why would he go against Trump? Ukraine was unaware that a hold had been placed on the military aid.
• By July 25, Ukrainian officials had inquired about the status of the aid. Politico reported about the hold on the aid Aug. 28.
On Sept. 1, EU Ambassador Gordon Sondland told Zelansky aide Andriy Yermak that the aid was conditioned on a public announcement of Burisma/Biden and the 2016 election interference investigations. Ambassador William Taylor texted Sondland: “Are we now saying that security assistance and WH meeting are conditioned on investigations?” Sondland told Taylor the meeting and the security assistance were now conditioned on the announcement. He said Trump wanted Zelensky in a “public box.”
On Sept. 7, Sondland told colleagues Zelensky would be required to announce the investigations in order for the hold on security assistance to be lifted. Sondland passed a similar message directly to Zelensky and Yermak. Taylor texted Sondland: “As I said on the phone. I think it’s crazy to withhold security assistance for help with a political campaign.”
The aid was ultimately released without Ukraine taking any action.
• The whistleblower’s complaint was filed Aug. 12. By early September, Zelensky agreed to do Trump’s bidding. An interview was booked on CNN. House committees announced an investigation into Trump/Ukraine Sept. 9. Trump lifted the hold on the aid on Sept. 11, after he was caught. Zelensky canceled the CNN interview Sept. 18 or 19.
