Reading in the Tribune about the candidates vying for election, a few thing struck me.
Almost all spoke of looking for ways to increase revenue. One who didn’t was Mr. Rick Copeland, who mentioned looking for ways to curb spending. He also mentioned the wasteful spending we have been experiencing.
The county has been losing population in recent years yet we are experiencing a 14 percent hike in our taxes. The county had 699 employees on Dec. 30, 2016; on Feb. 22, 2019, that number was 636. The 63 fewer employees meant those savings in payroll were significant. Yet, the current commissioners still outspent revenues.
I wish Mr. Copeland much success in keeping his stated goal should he become a new commissioner. We need to look for ways to stop wasteful spending, and the books will balance.
