As a supporter of Stand Up Republic, which promotes the separation of powers, I expect you to stand up for the constitutional authority of Congress and the rule of law. The role of Congress as an independent and equally powerful branch of government is essential to our constitutional system. No president can be allowed to flaunt oversight demands or circumvent the legislative branch.
Your authority is in jeopardy today. Too many members are willing to look the other way as the president disregards it and weakens it, possibly permanently by ignoring lawful requests for documents; government officials refusing to answer Congress’ questions and disregarding subpoenas, undermining Congress’ oversight abilities; and using lies and conspiracy theories to divide Americans and justify an ongoing obstruction of congressional power.
This threat to Congress endangers the health of our democracy and the constitutional checks and balances which are essential to our ability to govern ourselves. When your power is diminished so is that of those you are supposed represent. Failure to address this undermines not just the authority of Congress but the stability of our government.
As your constituent, I demand that you stand up for the office you were elected to hold to serve the people of our district, not any president. I expect my representatives to put Congress and the Constitution above partisanship. You cannot do that if you allow Congress to become subordinate to the presidency.
