People pass your property and some, I am sure, go across your lawn from time to time. I am also sure you would only call the law on those that do damage, those troublemakers. You know, the bad ones. And the rest you give a friendly hi as you both go along your business.

So why do we have boundaries and borders around property? To keep out the bad people I suppose. Then why waste our energy and resources locking up families that are fleeing bad guys?

Now troublemakers do sometimes get into and among us. Homegrown bad guys far outnumber those who come from elsewhere to our country, but there are some. The hunt for bad guys is never ending. And now we divert the bad-guy hunts for working fathers and homemaking mothers that for decades just lived next door. Again, I ask why waste the resources and energy rounding up the ones who just try to live the dream we all brag about?

Borders should keep out all who wish us ill. And we need to find a way to let in and welcome those who work to make our country's promise be more than hollow words.

We do not treat those who destroy property and those who just trespass the same. Because one is criminal and the other just a walkabout shortcut to a better destination. A shortcut most of us would take if needed.
