The Band of the Week II Band Camp for Adult Musicians at Allegheny College plays a free gala concert for the public at 7 p.m. Friday in Shafer Auditorium on the Allegheny College campus.
This concert is an opportunity to listen to the skills and accomplishments of this group of musicians.
The 48 campers and 17 staff members have come to Meadville from 14 states ranging from Massachusetts to California to Hawaii. While many states are represented at this week’s camp, it has the largest percentage of campers who are from Pennsylvania in the camp’s history.
The conductor is Col. Timothy J. Holtan, who retired in May 2017 as the senior military musician in the Department of Defense after serving 28 1/2 years as a conductor of Army Bands. He served at the 10th leader and commander of the U.S. Army Band “Perishing’s Own” from 2014 to 2017 and holds the distinction of being the first officer to command all three of the Army’s premier bands.
The other two are the U.S. Military Academy Band at West Point and the U.S. Army Field Band. Holtan is a native of North Dakota and a former music educator.
The soloist is Jenny Morris of South Charleston, W.Va. She is a member of the Charleston, WV Symphony Orchestra and has been a principal oboist at band camp for several years. She will perform Claude Debussy’s “The Girl with the Flaxen Hair” on English horn.
There are 31 pieces of band music in each musician’s folder that will be read through by the band before the program will be chosen. It is difficult to say which will appear on the concert program. Among the composers represented in this group are Leonard Bernstein, Robert Russell Bennett, Leroy Anderson and Henry Fillmore.
