John Christopher Soff of Meadville has announced plans to seek the Democratic Party nomination for re-election as Crawford County commissioner in the May 21 primary.
Soff first was elected commissioner in November 2015 and took his seat on the board in January 2016.
Soff previously served as a Crawford Central School Board director from 1993 to 1997; Meadville City councilman from 2006 to 2010; and mayor of the City of Meadville from 2010 to 2016.
Professionally, he owned and operated Hunter’s News in downtown Meadville and was vice president/secretary/treasurer of Allegheny Casualty Co.
In seeking re-election, Soff said he's proud of the professional working relationship he has maintained with his fellow commissioners and the staffs and the departments of county government.
Soff said there were hard decisions made and action taken on issues long deferred or previously unfinished.
Referring to the statement that he made four years ago seeking the office, Soff said, "I ran for this office because of my history of working together with my fellow elected officials at each level, the various staffs involved and the citizens of Crawford County in handling the difficult tasks and understanding Crawford County’s needs, wants and available funds."
"Effective county government is being able to maintain that delicate balance," he said. "We move forward together by arriving at consensus and making the difficult decisions."
If elected to another term as county commissioner, Soff said, he'll continue to carry out the responsibilities entrusted to him, acting in the best interests of all. Soff said he'll serve the needs of the people through the most prudent fiscal paths available.
Soff is a 1982 graduate of Meadville Area Senior High School and the Crawford County Vocational Technical School. He earned a bachelor's degree in French from The Pennsylvania State University in 1986, graduating with high honors and achieving the award of Phi Beta Kappa.
