VERNON TOWNSHIP — The driver of a car heading east on Conneaut Lake Road was able to escape a fire that started in the vehicle's engine.
The car experienced the fire around 2:18 p.m. Sunday near the intersection of Conneaut Lake Road and Culver Drive in Vernon Township.
"It was a mechanical issue," said Amanda Costerman, a Vernon Township Police Department officer who was on the scene. "No one was injured. The fire department was able to maintain the fire to the engine compartment.
"The fire department did a great job. The car was worse for the wear."
The car was reported on fire by the owner, who was driving behind the car that went ablaze, Costerman said. The car was being driven to a repair shop, Costerman said, when sparks were noticed coming from the car.
The scene was cleared at 3:06 that afternoon.
Vernon police did not provide any names of those involved with the car fire.
