Meadville trash collection will begin one hour earlier starting March 3, according to Assistant City Manager Gary Johnson.
Start times for trash collection routes will move from 10 p.m. to 9 p.m. on the evening before the scheduled trash pickup day, Johnson said.
For example, for residents scheduled to have their trash picked up on Thursday, collection will now begin at 9 p.m. Wednesday.
The change comes in conjunction with an expected change in the city ordinance that governs when trash bins can be placed on the street for collection. Last week City Council unanimously approved the first and second readings of an amendment that would allow trash bins to be placed on the street beginning at noon on the day before they are to be collected. The earliest time allowed under the current ordinance is 5 p.m.
The third and final reading of the time change to the ordinance will be up for a vote Feb. 20 at council’s next meeting. If approved, the change would go into effect 21 days later on March 13, Johnson said. He added that the city does not plan to send notices to residents who place their trash receptacles at the curb between noon and 5 p.m. once the earlier collection time goes into effect on March 3.
The expected shift to a 9 p.m. start time for trash collection would come a few months after the city allowed Tri-County Industries, its waste hauler, to unofficially move its start time from midnight to 10 p.m. THe earlier 9 p.m. start time would allow Tri-County trucks to finish their routes, which take about 10 hours, before school buses and most business-related traffic take to the roads.
The amendments to the refuse collection ordinance do not affect the timing for refuse cart removal once trash has been collected. As in the past, carts must be removed and stored with 24 hours of trash being collected.
Questions regarding trash removal may be directed to city officials at 724-6000, according to Johnson.
