A high speed police pursuit in southeastern Ohio this morning resulted in a standoff and officer involved shooting that has left a Meadville man dead.
Joshua Franklin Roberts, 41, was fatally shot by troopers from the Ohio State Highway Patrol following a chase of more than 100 miles per hour.
The chase began at a rest area along Route 7 at 8:48 a.m. after police did a registration check on a vehicle that turned out to be stolen from Meadville, according to police.
The chase ended on Ohio Route 7 in Belmont County, about 20 miles south of Wheeling, W.Va.
Roberts then got into a standoff with police and exited the vehicle while holding a woman at gunpoint, police said.
Roberts continued to hold the woman at gunpoint as the two walked toward troopers, police said. Roberts refused police commands to stop and drop the weapon, according to police.
Troopers then fired on Roberts, police said.
Troopers immediately provided first aid to Roberts, but Roberts was pronounced dead at the scene, police said.
The woman, Kristin L. McCoy, 34, of Greenville was injured and taken to a hospital for treatment.
She later was released and placed in the Belmont County jail on a warrant out of Pennsylvania, police said.
Charges also are pending against McCoy, police said.
