The Fantasticks

‘The Fantasticks,’ which runs the next two weekends at the Odd Fellows Building in Meadville, is a funny and romantic musical about a boy, a girl and their two fathers, who try to keep them apart.

A pair of productions open tonight and continue this weekend in Meadville.

Directed by Sarah Wolford and Assistant Director Carla Szalewicz, Meadville Community Theatre presents “The Fantasticks” today through Sept. 22 at 7:30 p.m. Fridays and Saturdays and 2 p.m. Sundays at the Odd Fellows Building at 400 N. Main St. on the campus of Allegheny College.

Allegheny College's Playshop Theatre presents "Denied Admission" at 8 p.m. today and Saturday and 2:30 p.m. Sunday at The Gladys Mullenix Black Theatre in the Vukovich Center for Communication Arts.

Since its opening in May 1960 at the Sullivan Street Playhouse in New York, and its subsequent revival at the Snapple Theatre Center, “The Fantasticks” has become the longest-running off-Broadway production.

“The Fantasticks” is a funny and romantic musical about a boy, a girl and their two fathers, who try to keep them apart. The narrator, El Gallo, asks the audience to use its imagination and follow him into a world of moonlight and magic.

The boy and the girl fall in love, grow apart and finally find their way back to each other after realizing the truth in El Gallo’s words: “Without a hurt, the heart is hollow.”

Tickets are $15 for adults and $12 for students and seniors.

The boundaries of personal liberty are examined in “Denied Admission,” a new play based on credible fear interviews of asylum seekers who crossed the southern U.S. border. This new work explores the rooms of the legal system, the streets of the Northern Triangle and the hearts of those seeking a home.

Tickets for Allegheny students are free but should be reserved in advance allegheny.edu/playshop. All others may make reservations at that website.

“Denied Admission” was devised and directed by Katie Beck, Allegheny Class of 2014, at Gum-Dip Theatre, her company in Akron, Ohio. The play contains subject matter that some might find offensive.
