The Thankful Thursdays team that has been cleaning up Meadville in recent months will take its talents to the Market House at 5 p.m. today in preparation for the upcoming First Friday and Second Saturday events this weekend.

“We’re going to start around the Market House and meet up at the Diamond afterwards,” said John Hartnett, who has helped to organize the events over the past several months along with Dan Hunter, Jason Sakal and others.

Saturday’s events include both the Community Market on Chestnut Street and the Second Saturday Night Live Park(ing Lot) Concert. Two earlier performances in the concert series took place atop the Market Square parking garage. This time, the show will go on in the Mill Run parking lot as preparations to refurbish the Market Square parking garage begin.

The series of recent all-volunteer cleanup gatherings around Diamond Park, the Meadville Area Recreation Complex and other locations have been going “awesomely,” Hartnett said.

The success of the cleanup efforts can be measured in how many trash bags are collected or how many trucks are filled, but a more accurate yardstick would be the sense of community spirit that results, according to Hartnett.

“We succeed if we even get a couple of neighbors out to meet each other and talk,” he said. “It’s always a good time.”

The good time will continue after today’s event when participants are invited to gather in Diamond Park for the Downtown Summer Concert Series performance by Woody Pines. The concert is presented by the Meadville Council on the Arts.

“Bring a trash bag and some friends,” said a posting on the Thankful Thursdays group’s Facebook page.
