SAEGERTOWN — A Saegertown man was pronounced dead at the scene following a Friday-night car-truck crash in Hayfield Township.
Thirty-seven-year-old Kevin Matthews of Berea, Ohio, was traveling south on State Routes 6 and 19 operating a 2004 Freightliner semi truck tractor with a flatbed trailer. Driving across the northbound lane approximately 3/10 mile north of Black Road, Matthews positioned his vehicle parallel to the roadway facing south at the entrance to a gravel pit on the east side of the road. He then pulled the semi truck back across the northbound lane in order to continue south.
Pennsylvania State Police report that Donald H. Storms, 51, of 19411 U.S. Highway 6 and 19, was traveling northbound on State Routes 6 and 19 at 8:43 p.m. when he failed to see Matthews’ semi truck and trailer pulling across the lane. When Storms took no evasive action, his car struck the rear tires of the truck tractor before sliding under the flatbed trailer and coming to rest in the middle of the road under the trailer.
Storms was pronounced dead at the scene at 9:24 p.m. by Crawford County Coroner Arden Hughes, who ruled that the cause of death was blunt force trauma to the head. Storms’ seatbelt was not in use.
Matthews, who was wearing a seatbelt, was not injured.
Pennsylvania State Police were assisted at the scene by Saegertown Volunteer Fire Department.
