VERNON TOWNSHIP — Crawford Central School Board has paved the way to not increase taxes after it unofficially approved the tentative 2015-16 budget.
“This was an aggressive budget compared to years of conservative budgets,” Business Manager Guy O’Neil said at Monday’s work session of the board.
A work session is generally used to set the agenda for the monthly meeting. The board is expected to officially vote on the tentative budget at next Monday’s meeting.
The budget committee comprised of board President Jan VanTuil, Vice President Jan Feleppa and members Jeff Deardorf, Glenn Tuttle, Frank Schreck and Jon DeArment did a good job positioning the district toward a no deficit budget, O’Neil said.
The anticipated budget has the district spending about $57 million for 2015-16, compared to $56.4 million in spending for the 2014-15 school year. The last time the district raised taxes was the 2013-14 school year.
There will be no significant cuts to the district’s offerings under the new proposed budget. The tentative budget has no deficit to be made up from the $12.6 million reserve fund balance.
There will be $800,000 transferred to the capital fund, O’Neil said. The capital fund is the fund which pays for construction projects. The $800,000 should cover any district capital needs for the next two years, he said.
The school district’s current millage rate for Crawford County residents is 50.81 mills. Mercer County residents pay 90.35 mills. The only municipality in Mercer County affected by the district is French Creek Township.
If the tentative budget passes, the millage rates will remain at these levels.
With one mill equaling $1 for every $1,000 in a property’s assessed value, an owner of a residence with the district’s median assessed value of $29,000 would have a school property tax bill of $1,473.49.
