WEST MEAD TOWNSHIP — Kuhn Tool & Die Co. of Meadville will have a new home in West Mead Township in 2015 — one that’s more than three times the size the company’s current location in Meadville.
Kuhn has purchased the former Heatrex Inc. facility at Route 77 and Leslie Road, located east of the Crawford County Fairgrounds. Kuhn Properties LLC, a real estate holding firm formed by Kuhn, has purchased the 4.7-acre property from MFGI 243 LLC of Tampa, Fla., for $300,000, according to property records at the Crawford County Courthouse.
“It gives us the opportunity to have more room,” said Ken Kuhn, president of Kuhn Tool & Die.
Kuhn Tool & Die Co. serves the aerospace and power generation industries, making jigs and fixtures used to make turbine blades and vanes.
Kuhn has 19 employees now but may be adding employment in the future “if business allows it,” Kuhn said.
The firm’s present location at 373 Davis St., on Meadville’s south side, has about 13,000 square feet, Kuhn said. The former Heatrex site, which was a manufacturing plant for heating elements, has 41,000 square feet, he said.
“We’ve considered a move for the last few years,” Kuhn said. “We’re out of floor space here.”
The firm purchased land behind its Davis Street shop, expanded in 2010 and remodeled its offices in 2011, “but we’re located within a residential area and we’re in on a variance,” Kuhn said.
Kuhn said the company had been weighing the cost and trying to pursue an additional variance for an expansion at the current location versus looking for another location.
“We want to move as soon as we can, but we have to make some improvements to the building,” Kuhn said of the West Mead Township location.
The move is expected to take place late in the first quarter of 2015 or in the second quarter of 2015, he said.
Once the move is completed, the Davis Street location either will be leased or put up for sale, Kuhn said, noting he doesn’t want to split company operations between two sites.
