CONNEAUT LAKE PARK — For couples Lloyd and Mary Goehring of Beaver Falls and Lee and Willene Anderson of Aliquippa, it’s the slow pace that attracts them to Conneaut Lake Park and its hotel.

“I work in a very stressful job (as a psychiatric nurse),” said Mary as the two couples sat together enjoying a sunny Saturday afternoon on the porch of the Hotel Conneaut. “This is peace and serenity.”

The two couples have been coming to Conneaut Lake Park for the past few years and are glad the Hotel Conneaut was able to open for the Labor Day weekend.

“When we found out the hotel was going to be open we switched plans,” said Mary. The couples initially had planned to go together to the Canfield Fair in Canfield, Ohio, for the three-day holiday weekend.

Last Monday, Jack Moyers, president of the board of the Trustees of Conneaut Lake Park, announced the hotel would open weekends only starting this weekend through the end of October. The board oversees the amusement park as a public trust.

While the hotel is open, its restaurant and lounge aren’t, but food and beverage are available at the Beach Club, located across the lawn from the hotel.

“I do miss the dining room,” said Willene.

Still, both couples say they were having a great time.

“It’s just very relaxing,” said Lee Anderson.

They said another stop for them was to be the Beach Club Saturday night.

“We like oldies music,” said Lloyd.

The Beach Club was hosting Black Diamond, playing music from the 1950s through the 1970s Saturday night.

Bonnie Easler, manager of the Hotel Conneaut, said some 75 to 80 of the hotel’s 109 rooms were expected to be booked by late Saturday night.

“It’s been a little hectic” Easler said of getting the hotel ready for this weekend on relatively short notice. “We were thrilled Wednesday and Thursday when we started getting responses from people wanting to come.”
