VERNON TOWNSHIP — Vernon Township Police have released a surveillance camera photo of the person who attempted to steal the prescription painkiller OxyContin at the Giant Eagle grocery store Feb. 27.

The suspect is described as Caucasian, 6 feet to 6 feet 3 inches tall and weighing 200 to 220 pounds, according to Vernon Police Chief John Rictor. The suspect has a bald or shaved head and a reddish-brown mustache goatee.

The man went to Giant Eagle in Vernon Township at 8:02 a.m. Feb. 27 and gave employees a note claiming he had a gun and knife and demanded OxyContin.

But the store doesn’t stock the drug, and when employees told the man that, he left. The action constitutes attempted robbery, officials said.

Officials have alleged the same man went to BiLo Foods in Meadville 10 minutes later and asked about the same drug. Again, he was told they did not stock the drug, and he left without demanding anything and no crime was committed.

Persons with information about suspect’s identity or whereabouts are asked to contact Vernon Township Police at 333-6309.
