COCHRANTON — Barb Opatrny is stepping down as Cochranton's borough manager after more than six years on the job to take a different career path.

Opatrny first joined the borough as a secretary in November 2010 and moved up to the borough manager's role in 2013 with the retirement then-manager Fran McClain.

"I've really enjoyed my time here and in helping the community," Opatrny said.

As borough manager, Opatrny oversees day-to-day government operations in a community of 1,136. She was paid $36,500 annually plus benefits in her role as borough manager.

Opatrny's last day on the job is today after she submitted her resignation to the borough on Oct. 28.

Opatrny is joining the accounting/bookkeeping staff of the Economic Progress Alliance of Crawford County, the county's lead economic development agency.

"It's not like I've fallen off the earth," she said with a chuckle. "The kids still go to school here."

Opatrny and her husband, Bill, are the parents of three children.

Opatrny said she got to know staff at the Economic Progress Alliance while working with the agency on the redevelopment of the former W.L. Dunn Co. property into the Cochranton Community Services Complex.

Mayor Mark Roche said he and council were sorry to see Opatrny leaving but happy she was staying in the area.

"We're very pleased with her performance," Roche said. "She took on a lot of jobs and was aggressive in wanting to learn," noting Opatrny took it upon herself to get a state-certified water operator license to help operate the borough's water system.

"It was kind of a shock, and we're sad to see her go," Roche said. "The good news is she's still local and just a phone call away."

Susan Armburger, the borough's secretary and water billing clerk, will serve as interim manager until a replacement is found for Opatrny, Roche said. Armburger has been with the borough since 2014.

Council's personnel committee of Roche, council President Dan Jackson and councilmen Dan Bresee and Tom Minnich will draft job specifications for the position and advertise the position.
