The Tribune’s Winter Athletes of the Year section comes out tomorrow and profiles the best the region had to offer in scholastic sports.

Meadville’s Bill Espy became the first person not named Nickerson to lead the Bulldog hockey club in scoring and helped the team clinch the second seed in the Pennsylva-nia Interscholastic Hockey League playoffs. Christian Nickerson led the 2004-05 team in scoring and his brother Morgan led the team from 2005-06 to 2007-08.

An electrifying sophomore and a seasoned senior lit up the area’s basketball courts this season. Conneaut Valley’s Casey Baker, in his second varsity season, led the region in scoring and carried the Indians into the District 10 playoffs, while General McLane’s Sarah Hansen, in her final season, sparked the team to the Class AAA West final, where the Lancers lost, 69-59, to Lampeter-Strasburg on Wednesday.

In wrestling, Grove City’s Caleb Kolb was the only wrestler from this corner of the state to bring home a PIAA gold medal.

Pick up Saturday’s Tribune to read their stories as well as find out who else was named to the Tribune’s sport-by-sport Dream Teams.
