The 91st annual Spartansburg Fair kicked off Sunday with its yearly open horse show and evening vesper service and continues today through Saturday.

And it’s all thanks to the incredible help of several volunteers, Spartansburg Fair Association president William Scouten Jr. said.

“We have a lot of people that help,” he said. “And we pay them zero. They are working a lot harder than I am.”

Scouten has been the president of the association for 35 years and said there wasn’t near the help then as there is now. With those volunteers in place, the Spartansburg Fair is able to host numerous events throughout the week, including a 5K race/walk and lots of musical entertainment like Felix Sounds of Elvis, Fiddler Karaoke, Earth Angels, Dottie Morgan & Revolving Door, and Loose Change.

Today’s activities begin at 8 a.m. with rabbit judging and conclude with the popular Spartansburg Fair Queen and Princess Pageant which starts at 8 p.m.

“The queen pageant draws a lot of people for a Monday,” Scouten said. “We have antique tractor pulls later in the week. They bring a lot in. Some come up for the horse pulls. The demolition derby gets a nice crowd and the parade on Saturday has a nice crowd.”

Admission is $4 per day for those 13 years old or older or $9 per week. Children 12 and under are free. Senior citizens are free Thursday until 5 p.m.

All events inside the fairgrounds are free with the exception of Saturday’s second annual Doug Boyle Memorial Demolition Derby. Admission to that event is $5.
