The public will get a chance to comment tonight on a proposal to extend North Street west to the French Creek Parkway.

The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation is holding a public hearing from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. at Meadville Area Senior High School’s cafeteria, 930 North St.

PennDOT is holding the hearing to discuss the project’s status and present three potential alternatives to connect North Street with the French Creek Parkway and Bessemer Street.

The North Street-French Creek Parkway connector is expected to cost $2.6 million. It would include a new four-way intersection with traffic light at the French Creek Parkway.

The connector is designed to alleviate heavy truck traffic from downtown streets, such as Park Avenue and Water Street and put it on North Street. Often, big trucks use Park Avenue or Water Street to get to North Street, causing backups and delays when they turn onto North from another downtown road.
