The manhunt for Keith D. Green — a suspect described by Ohio authorities as armed and dangerous — was scaled down Thursday by Meadville Police as the local search went into a second day.
Authorities in Ashtabula County, Ohio, want Green regarding a marijuana case, two counts of trafficking in marijuana, two counts of aggravated burglary, felony vandalism and felony theft warrants, according to an email to the Tribune from Lt. Van Robison, detective bureau commander with the Ashtabula County Sheriff’s office.
Green was subject of an intense manhunt that began in the city of Meadville late Wednesday morning. A Meadville detective spotted the car Green was known to be driving — a white Lincoln sedan — parked at 671 Park Ave.
As officers attempted to surround 671 Park Ave., just after 11 a.m. Wednesday, Green fled from the rear of the residence. Officers did not see that Green had a weapon.
That led to Wednesday’s hunt for Green by authorities from throughout the region. The search extended into the late evening hours with Green supposedly spotted near Limber Road by a member of the Pennsylvania State Police.
Police searched the Limber Road area as well as nearby Meadville streets of Meadow, Ben Avon and Woodland Place near Allegheny College, after several reports of sitings, but were unable to locate Green, Chief David Stefanucci of Meadville Police said Thursday.
Officers did find one man out on the streets in the area around Ben Avon and Meadow streets, but he was a homeowner, Stefanucci said.
“He’s still considered armed and dangerous until we find out otherwise because that’s the way it was reported to us by Ohio authorities,” Stefanucci said of Green.
Meadville Police will continue to be on the lookout for Green and search for him when given leads, according to Stefanucci. However, he said the intensity of the search was scaled down Thursday.
“We don’t have anything on him,” Stefanucci said referring to any criminal charges against Green by Meadville or other Pennsylvania law enforcement.
“All we have is the fugitive from justice warrant from Ohio,” Stefanucci said. “We have no reason to look for him. If we know he’s in the area, we’ll do everything to apprehend him. It’s our duty, if he’s in our area, to look for and to capture him.”
Though there are no active charges against Green in Crawford County, he’s no stranger to the county court system here.
On June 21, 2011, Green pleaded guilty before Magisterial District Judge William Chisholm to a Meadville Police charge of disorderly conduct-hazardous condition, a third-degree misdemeanor, and paid $299.50 in fines and costs, according to records at the Crawford County Clerk of Courts Office. A companion charge of drunkenness prohibited was withdrawn as part of a plea bargain, according to court records.
Meadville Police had charged Green for an incident June 9, 2011, at a home at 673 Park Ave., which also was listed as Green’s residence, according to court records.
Green screwed the doors to 673 Park Ave. shut and placed a couch in front of the door to keep a woman from entering the residence, according to court records. There were two small children in the residence at the time, according to court records.
Green also screamed profanities out of a window at the home, directing them at the woman, according to court records.
Persons with information about Green’s whereabouts are asked to contact Meadville Police at 724-6100.
Keith D. Green remains at large after a five-hour manhunt Wednesday, leaving area residents wondering how concerned they should be.
The best advice is to remain vigilant by keeping an eye out, exercise caution by keeping doors locked and to call police immediately if you believe you may have spotted Green. Residents are cautioned to not approach a person they believe may be Green — Ohio authorities have warned Meadville police to consider Green armed and dangerous, and that Green has allegedly used firearms against law enforcers in the past. The Meadville police number is 724-6100. If you have spotted a person you believe is Green outside of Meadville, call 911.
While it is not known if Green remains in the area, he does have known associates living in Meadville on South Main Street, Park Avenue and Baldwin Street.
Green is a 35-year-old white male, 5 feet 10 inches tall, weighing about 170 pounds. He has brown “buzz-cut” hair, brown eyes and tattoos on his right biceps and both shoulders. He was last seen wearing a tan-colored, long-sleeve T-shirt and purple sweat pants and may have had tan shorts on underneath the sweat pants.
