CONNEAUTVILLE — Conneaut Valley coach Rob Glus is kicking himself for not moving senior Ronny Spotswood from quarterback to running back sooner.
Celebrating their senior night in fashion, the Indians — energized by Spotswood’s 111 yards rushing, junior quarterback Tyler Jones’ 98 all-purpose yards and a stingy defense — notched their third win of the season with an 18-0 shutout over Maplewood Friday night in Region 2 action.
In Conneaut Valley’s third game of the season, Glus — unhappy with his offensive production — decided to move his main weapon, Spotswood, from quarterback to running back.
Both Spotswood and Jones have thrived with their new roles.
“We tinkered with the idea in the preseason, but Tyler didn’t show me enough confidence,” said Glus. “Now, Tyler has the confidence and things are a lot better. I wish I would have made the change earlier because I think things would have been different.”
As for Spotswood, Glus realizes the Indians are in good hands when their speedster is toting the pigskin.
“Ronny is a good runner and we knew we had to utilize his skills more,” said Glus.
Maplewood probably wishes Spotswood had stayed at quarterback.
On CV’s first possession, Spotswood — carrying the ball twice for 24 yards — helped the Indians get to Maplewood’s 1, but on 4th-and-one, the Tigers stopped Mitch Shreve for no gain.
The Tigers’ defensive stop didn’t do them any favors.
Maplewood managed to only gain one yard in three plays, and on fourth down, the Tigers’ snap sailed over punter Eugene Yochim’s head for a CV safety.
With :36 left in the first quarter, Jones showcased his passing touch — lofting a 48-yard touchdown pass to running back Cody Ul down the left sideline.
