SAEGERTOWN — Utilizing a pair of lengthy touchdown drives in the first half, and a clutch defensive effort in the second half, the Saegertown High football team held on for a 15-8 win over Maplewood in Region 2 football action on Friday.
In the first quarter, the Panthers (5-3, 4-2 Region 2) put together a 15-play drive that led to a 1-yard touchdown run by QB Zach Beatty.
Saegertown followed it up in the second quarter with a 17-play drive that saw Kyle Crum — who had a game-best 147 yards on 35 carries — take it in from one yard out. Beatty then connected with receiver David Haskins for the 2-point conversion.
Maplewood (2-5, 2-4 Region 2) made it 15-8 in the third quarter when back-up quarterback Andy King scored on a 1-yard touchdown, then hit Chris Beightol with a pass for the two-point conversion.
In the fourth quarter, a Saegertown punt snap went high. Maplewood recovered near the red zone. However the Tigers fumbled the ball on the first play of the possession, giving the ball back to the Panthers and ending Maplewood’s best chance to tie up the game.
Lakers swallow up Bears
UNION CITY — Jayson Nickson had 150 yards and three touchdowns leading undefeated Mercyhurst Prep to a 36-8 victory over win-less Union City in Region 2 action on Friday.
Scotty Brown, who led the Bears (0-8, 0-6 Region 2) with 55 yards on 11 carries, scored Union City’s lone touchdown with a 20-yard run in the fourth quarter.
