Special to The Meadville Tribune
Meadville/Vernon pitcher Matt Burchard kept Linesville/Lake/ Valley/Jamestown quiet through the first three innings of Saturday’s District 1 Junior League winner’s bracket semifinal.
However, the silence was broken by the sound of thunder at the end of the third as a storm passed overhead, soaking the field at the Lynn Summers Complex and postponing the conclusion of the game.
Action is scheduled to resume in the top of the fourth today at 2 p.m. at the Summers Complex. Meadville/Vernon owns a 5-0 lead. LLVJ will be up at the plate.
However, should there be more rain overnight, the field might not be playable, so the game could change venues and/or be moved to a different time. A final decision about the resumption of the game is expected to be made by noon today.
That wasn’t the only game affected by yesterday’s storm. The Junior League baseball loser’s bracket game between Titusville and Mid-East was postponed in the top of the fifth inning with Titusville leading 2-0. The game will resume today at 6 p.m. at the Randolph Township Building.
Also, the Little League loser’s bracket final between Meadville and Cochranton didn’t get underway until around 9:45 last night and was not completed in time to make the press deadline.
As for yesterday’s action at Linesville, it was shaping up to be a big one for Burchard. He had a no-hitter going through three innings. He had walked one and hit one batter and struck out two.
Burchard was also 2-for-2 at the plate, including a two-run double during M/V’s four-run first inning.
Bailey Bustamante added an RBI single in the frame.
Meadville/Vernon added its fifth run in the second inning thanks to an RBI single by Antonio Ferraro.
