The Meadville Bulldogs hockey team has one loss on its Lakeshore Hockey League slate. And the team responsible for giving Meadville that one loss got its comeuppance on Thursday night as the Bulldogs thrashed Southwest/Maplegrove 10-2 in a rematch at the DeArment Ice Center.
SWMG had beaten Meadville 5-4 back on Feb. 4.
Last night's win improves the ’Dogs’ league record to 8-1-2 and it solidified their status as the No. 1 seed for the upcoming Lakeshore playoffs, which are tentatively scheduled to begin on March 7 with the championship game slated for March 14.
The game also served to pad some stats for numerous Meadville skaters.
Eight different Bulldogs scored goals in the game. Cade Nickerson got it started with a goal with 7:22 left in the first. Then he bookended the scoring with goal No. 10 a minute and a half into the third.
Chace Vickers also had a pair of goals, both scored in the second period.
Also scoring was Brock Biggs, Rob Stainbrook, Bryan Ray, Josh Orr, Mike Bogardus and Owen Miller.
Orr, John Gizzie and Steven Shafer each had two assists in the game. Ray, Biggs, Stainbrook, Trevor Johnson, Barrett Hoffman, Vince Paczkoskie and Gabe Stein also recorded helpers.
The Bulldogs took a 3-0 lead after one period, scoring all three goals in the latter half of the first. They then exploded for five straight goals in the second, pulling ahead 8-0.
Alexander Carlson finally answered for Southwest/Maplegrove, scoring on a power play with 1:50 left in the second.
Meadville then struck twice more in the first minute and a half of the third period.
Before time ran out, Carlson scored SWMG’s second and final goal to finish up the game. Andrew Farnham had the assist on both of Carlson’s goals.
Sam Kineston faced 19 shots and made 17 saves for Meadville.
Noah Weinstein made 11 saves on 14 shots in the first before being replaced by Ben Richard in the second. Richard faced 31 shots — giving Meadville a total of 45 for the night — and stopped 24.
The next hockey action in Meadville is on Saturday, when the Crawford County Flames midget team takes on Allegheny at 5 p.m. at the MARC.
The Bulldogs finish up their Lakeshore schedule on Sunday at 2:45 p.m. against Fairview at the Mercyhurst Ice Center.
