GROVE CITY — Despite having three players shoot sub-80 scores on a difficult Grove City Country Club  course, Meadville was unable to take the top spot Monday as it placed second to Grove City during high school boys golf action.

The Bulldogs certainly had consistency, but the team total of 349 was eight strokes off the pace set by Grove City, who won with a 341.

Slippery Rock took third due to a tiebreaker with a 357, followed by Warren (357) and Oil City (372).

The Bulldogs’ Charlie Holt and Dalton Zelasco both carded 85s to lead Meadville, followed by Kyle Luben’s 89 and Matt Burchard’s 90.

The medalist for the event was Grove City’s Matt Gordon, who shot a 74, 11 strokes better than the rest of the field.

“We never play well on the Grove City course,” Meadville head coach Fred Garvey said. “The greens were really fast and it was just set up hard. For Gordon to shoot a 74 was really impressive.”

Meadville still sits on top of the Region 3 standings with 14 points, followed closely by Slippery Rock at 11 points. Grove City (9), Warren (8) and Oil City (3) round out the region.
