DISTRICT 10 CLASS A SOFTBALL: Lady Panthers look to continue dynamite season

MEADVILLE — The Saegertown softball team has spent all season marking items off its lengthy check list.

Region 3 title? Check. Undefeated region season? Check. PIAA Class A state playoff berth? Check.

But there are at least two more big items remaining on that list. The Panthers can take care of one of them today.

Saegertown takes the field today at noon in an attempt to defend its District 10 Class A championship. The Panthers face Iroquois in the district title game at Penn State Behrend.

The Panthers earned their spot in the District 10 title match with an 11-1 five-inning win over Reynolds.

Saegertown has lost just one contest in Pennsylvania this season. That loss came back on May 3 to McDowell, who will be playing for the District 10 Class AAAA title against Strong Vincent today.

The Panthers’ other two losses came during their spring trip to Florida. They fell to Morgantown (W.Va.) 7-4 and Boyd County (Ky.) 8-7.

Saegertown will be put to the test today against the Braves. Like Saegertown, Iroquois has a region title under its belt this season. The Braves won the Region 5 crown with a 9-1 mark and enter the District 10 championship game at 15-5.

Iroquois beat Sharpsville 7-5 on Friday. Joanna Ragen picked up the win on the mound despite walking seven batters.

The Braves used two big innings to eliminate the Blue Darlings. They scored three runs in the second and four more in the fifth. Jenny Johnson and Emily Martin had two hits each.

The Panthers and Braves do have one similar opponent. One of Iroquois’ five losses came at the hands of Cambridge Springs by an 8-1 score. Saegertown swept the Blue Devils during Region 3 play with 14-6 and 7-4 victories.

Going into the postseason, Saegertown had seven batters hitting at least .300 led by leadoff batter Rachel DiBartolomeo (.522). Arianna Hanley was next at .516, followed by Lexi Palmer (.448), Courtney Lilly (.377), Jaricka Simmerman (.348), McKenna Morian (.327) and Tori Eckart (.300).

Both Saegertown and Iroquois have already earned state playoff berths regardless of today’s outcome.

Through three innings Tuesday afternoon at home, it looked like it was going to be a very long day for the Saegertown baseball team.
The wind and the cold didn’t appear to bother Harbor Creek starting pitcher Issac Mattson as the senior struck out nine batters through the first three frames, including four strikeouts in the first inning alone.
