H.S. FOOTBALL: Reddick, Breese earn All-State honors

HARRISBURG — Blake Reddick ran for 2,974 yards this season, and a good portion came by running behind the blocks of teammate Sam Breese.

So it is only fitting that, after the duo helped Lakeview to its most successful season in school history, the pair earned a spot on the 2013 Pennsylvania Football Writers’ All-State Team.

The honor was well deserved in both cases.

Reddick’s rushing total was tops in the state and 700 yards more than Class AAA Player of the Year Andre Robinson of Bishop McDevitt. The senior also scored 33 touchdowns and averaged 11.31 yards per carry as the Sailors won their first District 10 Class A title.

“On defense too,” said Lakeview head coach Dan York. “Blake was huge on defense too. Yes, he ran for almost 3,000 yards. But he had seven interceptions, two forced fumbles. He was big on both sides of the ball.”

The same holds true for Breese, who made it as a defensive lineman.

The 6-foot-11, 280 pound senior was a preseason all-state selection on the offensive line, but York was proven correct in thinking his big man was a better defensive player. According to York, Breese was second in the state for sacks by a defensive lineman with 12. He also had 104 tackles, 18 tackles for loss, 10 quarterback hurries and two forced fumbles. For good measure, Breese also blocked two punts and a field goal.

“I tell people all the time that Sam is an athlete,” said York. “He uses his hands well. He gets off the ball well. Just a great athlete.”

And this All-State nod is not the first honor for either player, but another in what is sure to be a long list to come.

According to York, WKBN television in Boardman, Ohio named Reddick the Pennsylvania Football Player of the Year at its Big 22 banquet on Wednesday. At that same banquet, WKBN Sports honored Breese as one of its “Five Blocks of Granite”, which goes annually to the five best lineman in the area.

“Any successful team has to have the players,” said York. “It is not about the Xs or the Os, it is about the Bills and the Joes. And they were two of the best that ever played here at Lakeview.”

Robinson’s heavy workload of 2,279 rushing yards and 32 total touchdowns earned the junior Class AAA Player of the Year honors as part of the 2013 Pennsylvania Football Writers’ All-State Team.

Brandon Yescavage, the leader behind Old Forge’s sprint to championship weekend in Hershey, and South Williamsport’s Dominick Bragalone, shared the same distinction in Class A.

This is the fourth year the all-state selection process has been overseen by the sportswriters who cover high school football around the Commonwealth. Players are nominated in all four PIAA classifications, then a statewide ballot was issued to afford all writers the opportunity to cast their votes.

Archbishop Wood’s Steve Devlin and North Catholic’s Bob Ravenstahl were named Class AAA and Class A Coach of the Year, respectively.
