CONNEAUT LAKE — OK. That was more like it.Coming off a tough Week 9 performance in Sharpsville, Linesville quarterback Trevor Litwiler rushed for two touchdowns and passed for five as the Lions closed the regular season with a 49-8 final over backyard rival Conneaut Lake (1-9 overall, 0-9 Region 1) on Friday.

CAMBRIDGE SPRINGS — The Blue Devils are heading into the playoffs with a full head of steam.Getting another gangbuster performance from junior running back Corey Dunton and a near-perfect game from senior quarterback Stephen Kargol, Cambridge Springs extended its winning streak to five games Friday night with a 35-0 shutout over arch-rival Saegertown in Region 2 action at Baird Field.

Sailors' playoff bid trampled

STONEBORO — District 10 asked, “Who wants to go to the playoffs?” And the Mercer football team, like the overly eager kid in the front of the class, shot its hand into the air and went, “Me, me, me, me, me!”The Mustangs secured what will likely be the fourth and final playoff spot out of Region 1 with a convincing 35-6 victory over the homestanding Lakeview Sailors Friday night.

’Dogs, Lancers advance to semis

In the game of volleyball, very little can be predicted. That became quite clear Thursday during the District 10 Class AA quarterfinals at Meadville High School’s House of Thrills.Unpredictable, however, was just fine by General McLane and Meadville, who needed the bare minimum to decide their fate in Saturday’s semifinal round back at the House of Thrills. That wasn’t the case on the other side of the bracket.

’Dogs looking for win in season finale

If it’s because somebody broke a mirror, then Meadville may have luck restored tonight at Erie Veteran’s Memorial Stadium. The Bulldogs (4-5) take on non-region opponent Strong Vincent (7-2) in a 7 p.m. kickoff. It’s been seven years since Meadville has gotten the better of the Colonels. The last time the ’Dogs defeated Vincent was all the way back in 2001.

Sailors face Mustangs with playoff spot on the line

Big game, huh? “Yeah,” laughed Mercer coach Pat McClearn, “I guess you could say that.”McClearn and the Mustangs (6-3, 4-3 Region 1) are taking on Lakeview (6-3, 4-3 Region 1) tonight at 7 p.m. And if the District 10 playoff berths get doled out like they have in year’s past — four for Region 1 and four for Region 2 — the winner of tonight’s game is in the playoffs, and the loser is kaput.

Cardinals and Tigers win pools, advance to semis

Cochranton put itself in quite a precarious situation last season when a loss to Saegertown pit the Cardinals against rival Maplewood in the District 10 Class A semifinals. The Cards wound up losing to the Tigers in a classic ending their chance at a record-tying fifth straight District 10 title and a trip to the PIAA state playoffs.

Court cases

Maplewood and Cochranton have one goal in mind as the Tigers and Cardinals enter today’s District 10 playoffs at Meadville Area Senior High School: make it to states.Sounds easy for a pair of teams that have combined to win 11 D-10 titles and a pair of state championships since 2000. However, a closer look at the competition, and perhaps it will not be as easy as perceived.
