Gerhart looks to keep season alive

Meadville senior Alyssa Gerhart has one more chance to keep her season alive at Wednesday’s PIAA West Regional at Tom’s Run Golf Course in Blairsville, about an hour east of Pittsburgh.
After barely missing out on advancing out of the District 10 tournament the last two years, Gerhart earned one of four spots at regionals at last Tuesday’s D-10 tournament.
In Gerhart’s sophomore and junior years, she missed reaching regionals by one position each time.
“She will have to play within herself,” Meadville golf coach Fred Garvey said. “She will have to keep her head and think her way around the course. If she does that, she will be very tough to beat.”
She is in a field of 25 playing for what was last year one of nine spots in the state tournament.
Garvey said he expects Tom’s Run to play about 5,400 yards. Tom’s Run opened in 1994 was named the sixth-best public course in Pennsylvania by Golf Digest.
“There is trouble everywhere, so you have to play pick your spots,” Garvey said. “It’s just a great course. Alyssa can definitely overpower the course.”
But Garvey said Gerhart will have to be precise to avoid trouble and high scores on Wednesday.
Gerhart advanced to regionals with a third-place finish at the District 10 tournament Tuesday, shooting a 10-over-par 82 at Riverside Golf Course. She defeated North East’s Kelly Moylan in a playoff for the third and fourth spot.
District 10’s two other regional qualifiers are Oil City’s Becca Shuster, who was the medalist, firing an 80 last week, and Slippery Rock’s Jenna Rinker, who had an 81.
