EDINBORO — The McLane 10 & 11 baseball all-stars have been giving opposing pitchers nightmares filled with repetitive ball-versus-bat “ping” sounds.
The boys won the championship title at the McLane Little League fields in an 18-3, four-inning affair against Tri-Boro South Saturday.
In doing so they drove in 15 runs with 12 hits in three innings for a collective .480 average and four extra-base shots.
Against Meadville in the winner’s bracket final last Tuesday, McLane pounded out 11 hits in another shortened, four-inning contest.
“We have a pretty balanced attack as far as our hitting goes,” McLane skipper Jim Mountain said.
Caleb “Cubby” Nesselhauf led the charge with a monstrous six RBIs. The right fielder hit a grand slam to the opposite field against TBS starter Justin Tapper in the first.
In the second inning he greeted reliever Tyler Fiely by putting the first pitch of the side over the wall in left.
“Two different pitchers,” Mountain said. “He hit the ball real well. Sometimes if he hits the ball it just goes. It jumps off his bat.”
From there, Dan Mountain (2-for-4, 3 runs, 3 RBIs) and Pete Solberg (2-for-2, 2 runs) kept the pace.
McLane put up 10 in the first inning and eight in the second before retiring quietly in the third.
On the mound, starter Tyler Sanders allowed one earned run in three innings of no-hit ball.
TBS scored two in the third and one in the fourth. Tapper had the only hit with an RBI double in the fourth.
District 1 champion McLane will play at 8 p.m. Thursday, July 24 against the District 10 (Warren County) champion at the Crawford County Fairgrounds fields in the Section 1 Tournament.
The same group of kids moved on as the 9 & 10 champs last year, so it will be familiar territory.
“We got to sections and lost to Warren,” Mountain said. “They’ll know what to expect, At every level the competition gets better.”
