Of the 10 teams participating in Region 2 softball, only one was lucky enough to know its playoff fate for certain at the conclusion of regular season play Thursday.

That fortune was bestowed to Union City, which earned the region’s only automatic District 10 playoff berth by winning the Region 2 championship Tuesday with a 1-0 win over Cambridge Springs.

The Lady Blue Devils, at 17-3, were expected to clinch an at-large berth in the Class A tournament alongside Union City and did just that. But of fellow Class A squads Cochranton and Conneaut Valley and Class AA Maplewood — who were also competing for at-large bids — only one survived the cut: the Lady Tigers.

Maplewood, at 10-10 overall, was awarded the sixth seed in the Class AA bracket and will face defending District 10 champion Iroquois in the opening round at 4 p.m. Tuesday at Allegheny College.

The Braves at 16-4 are the third seed. Fourth seed West Middlesex and fifth seed Titusville square off in the other quarterfinal game. The winner of that game will play unbeaten and top seeded Villa Maria (20-0) in the semifinals.

The Maplewood versus Iroquois winner will face second seed Wilmington (18-1).

In Class A, Union City is the top seed and will play Eisenhower (6-10) at 4 p.m. Thursday at Allegheny College. That game will follow Cambridge Springs versus Kennedy Catholic (10-8) which will be played at 2 p.m. at AC.

The Class AAA bracket includes No. 1 Corry (13-3), No. 2 Franklin (13-4), No. 3 Harbor Creek (14-6) and No. 4 Hickory (8-7).

Strong Vincent (15-3) and McDowell (11-8) will play for the Class AAAA crown.
