CAMBRIDGE SPRINGS — One year ago the Saegertown boys volleyball team captured the program’s first-ever District 10 championship.
On Tuesday, the Panthers pulled closer to yet another program first, topping Cambridge Springs, 25-23, 27-25, 23-25, 25-19, to pull to within a win of their first-ever conference title.
Saegertown improved to 11-2 overall and in Region 1 with the victory and remains tied for first place with Maplewood, which swept Farrell yesterday. Should Saegertown and Maplewood, which faces Cambridge Springs on Thursday, remain tied at the end of the season, the two would share the Region 1 crown.
The Tigers, however, would earn the top seed in the District 10 tournament via a tiebreaker over Saegertown. Maplewood and Saegertown split during the regular season, but the Tigers hold the advantage in games won, 5-3.
Saegertown would earn the title and the No. 1 seed outright with a win and a Maplewood loss.
“It’s a nice win,” Saegertown senior outside hitter Ben Wetsell said following last night’s match. “It’s like one more step toward our goal.
“Every year, (coach Justin) Johnson always brings out the banner showing that we’ve never won a region title in history. We at least want a share of it. Maybe we could get some help and take it all.”
The Panthers certainly had to work hard, though, to even have a chance at a share. That’s because the Spa, celebrating Senior Night and needing just two wins to jump into the region championship picture itself, wasn’t about to go down without a fight.
The first two games last night could have gone either way.
In the first game, no team led by more than two points ever. The game featured 19 ties and nine lead changes. Saegertown finally went up for good at 22-21 on a kill by Ben Wetsell. The Panthers extended that lead to two points (23-21) on an ace by Kyle Beatty.
Cambridge Springs’ Colton Spaid drew the Spa back to within one at 23-22, but Wetsell answered with another kill to extend the lead back to two and pull the Panthers within game point at 24-22. Spaid answered with another kill, but Wetsell put down his seventh kill of the game to give the Panthers a crucial Game 1 victory.
“Anytime when you’re in the situation where it’s Senior Night on the road, if you can get that first game it’s a bonus,” Saegertown coach Justin Johnson said. “That can be the difference in the match.”
And if winning the first game wasn’t big enough, the Panthers responded with another huge win in the second game. Saegertown was within game point (24-22) in the second game before a service error and Larry Green ace pulled the Spa into a 24-24 tie.
Cambridge Springs took its first lead of the match at 25-24 on a Saegertown attack error, needing just a point to even the match. A ball-handling error tied the game back up at 25-25, though. Wetsell answered with a kill to put Saegertown back up on top and a miscue on serve-receive sealed the game for the Panthers at 27-25.
The Blue Devils did respond to win the third game, but dug themselves a 13-7 deficit in Game 4 and could not recover.
