Guys Mills resident Paul Hirosky is in 96th place at the CITGO Elite Series Bassmaster Capitol Clash along the Potomac River.

Hirosky caught one bass. It weighed 3 pounds, 12 ounces. From his current spot, the Channellock-sponsored angler looks like a longshot to make the cut.

Elite series rookie Kevin Langill leads the event. He caught five bass that weighed 18 pounds, 1 ounce.

The tournament continues today with the 5:30 a.m. launch and 3 p.m. weigh-in.

Werle, Team USA win

MONTERREY, Mexico — The U.S. men’s junior national team beat Guatemala 3-0 Wednesday.

Matt Werle, a 2005 Meadville graduate played in games 2 and 3 of the U.S. win.

“As a setter, I was trying to keep the offense spread in order to spread their block and run the middles quick and over the top of their block,” Werle said. “This was not one of the better matches we have played, but there is still lots of volleyball yet to come.”

Team USA is 2-0 and faced Mexico on Thursday. The quarterfinals begin today.

Gator netters honored

The Intercollegiate Tennis Association honored eight Allegheny players with a spot on their Scholar Athlete squads as well as putting the women’s team on the All-Academic Team list.

Recently graduated senior Seth Wilmore, juniors Nick Lieb, Tim McClung and sophomore Matt Chiricosta all earned scholar athlete distinctions.

The women’s team landed four players on the Division III scholar athlete team, including seniors Christina Ungaro, Amanda Bolger, Rachel Berenson, Carrie Miller.

To qualify for the ITA academic honors, an individual had to have a grade point average of 3.5 or higher and letter in the sport, while a team had to have a GPA of 3.2 or higher.
