Ray Eldridge holds up the picture that ended up leading him to play Santa later in life. The picture was taken during World War II when he was a sonar specialist on the U.S.S. Loy, a destroyer escort patrolling the Pacific Ocean. Eldridge didn’t have a beard when his wife Mary saw the old Navy picture. She insisted he grow his beard and the rest is local history.
