Local photographer captures beauty of Pymatuning State Park and wins statewide award

JAMESTOWN — Mary Thall of Jamestown recently won first place in the Outdoor Recreation category of the Pennsylvania Parks and Forests Foundation’s 2013 Through the Seasons statewide photo contest. The winning photograph featured a sunset over the lake at Pymatuning State Park.

“I was inspired to take this picture because of the beauty of the area I live in,” Thall said. “I love to share my pictures of our local park with others to show them what a great place it is, and to inspire others to value our state parks and forests as much as I do.

“I value our local state parks, especially Pymatuning State Park, because of all it has to offer the outdoor enthusiast. Whether it’s hiking, boating, fishing, hunting, swimming, snowmobiling or wildlife watching, we all need to take advantage of what our parks have to offer and appreciate their worth in our environment.”

The PPFF contest included the categories Appreciation of Beauty, Kids in the Outdoors, Outdoor Recreation and Dogs in the Outdoors. All photos had to be taken in a Pennsylvania state park or forest, and judging was done by popular vote and critics’ choice. All winners may be viewed at paparksandforests.org/photo_contests.html.

“Every year we are inspired by the array of talented photographers and the images they capture in our state parks and forests,” PPFF President Marci Mowery said. “These images remind us to take time to be in the outdoors.”

Founded in 1999, the Pennsylvania Parks and Forests Foundation supports 120 state parks and 2.2 million acres of forest by coordinating volunteers, activities and donations through its 36 chapters. The nonprofit promotes outdoor recreation, healthier lifestyles and environmental education. The foundation also engages park and forest users in a variety of contests and events throughout the year.
