Local photographer wins honors in worldwide Audubon nature contest

Gilson brings home one top honor and two finalist awards

JAMESTOWN, N.Y. — With more than 350 entries from 153 photographers from around the world, Meadville photographer Ricardo Gilson was a winner in the 2013 Jamestown, N.Y., Audubon Nature Photography Contest.

Gilson’s “Hepatica” won the adult plants category while two of his other entries were recognized as finalists in the wildlife and landscapes categories.

The categories for submissions of photographs were landscapes, plants (including trees, fungi, lichens, mosses and others), and wildlife (animals in their natural habitats), with adult and youth (those age 18 and under or still in high school) divisions in each category.

“Part of Jamestown Audubon’s mission is to connect people with nature,” said Jennifer Schlick, Audubon program director and contest coordinator. “The breathtaking quality of some of the 2013 photo contest entries will surely inspire the viewer to make that connection.”

Other winners were:

Adult landscape: Alan Sloyer of Roslyn, N.Y., “Chinese fishing nets – Kochi, India”

Adult wildlife: James Day of Griffin, Ga., “Moose in the Aspens”

Youth landscape: Alan Wei of Setauket, N.Y., “Old Growth”

Youth plants: Jaymes Dempsey of Ann Arbor, Mich., “Coming Autumn”

Youth wildlife: Jenna Van Kley of Powell, Ohio, “Double-crested Cormorant”

All winners received $100 plus $50 in photo finishing. All entries were submitted digitally. Finalists came from as far away as Brazil, Italy, Taiwan, and India. The winning images as well as the finalists may be seen at

Proceeds from the contest support Audubon’s environmental education programs.
