LOCAL COLUMN: Those who turn their backs on abortion have lost their way
By Thaddeus Kedziora
In response to Jim Drane’s column, “Responsible Christian voters consider more than abortion,” (Oct. 25), I would sub-title this article, “All true born-again Christian voters consider only abortion.” Mr. Drane considers abortion a “complex” issue understood only by “thoughtful reasoning,” “mature people” who form their “consciences” to make moral and religious decisions.
Religion and morality have only to do with human righteousness. Men create religions and men create morality. Both change constantly. When I was in college, homosexuality was taught as deviant, criminal, unnatural behavior. Today it is considered an alternative lifestyle.
The morals of our country have changed along with religion. What has not changed is God’s teaching on righteousness. (Malachi 3:6)
Mr. Drane says that voting solely on the basis of slogans makes one a superficial person. He suggests God is superficial since God wrote “to take life for life, eye for eye, tooth for tooth,” whenever a pregnant woman’s baby is either stillborn prematurely or injured as a result of physical abuse. (Exodus 21:22) God’s word would also be what Mr. Drane refers to as “simple-minded laws that make every abortion a crime.”
Mr. Drane and other religious and so-called Christians believe care for the poor and those discriminated against trump a baby’s life made in God’s image. Let me suggest that these people, in reality, hate God. The Bible says that there is no greater love than giving your life to save another’s life. (John 15:15)
One cannot understand the violence of abortion without first understanding the purpose and essence of life. People such as Mr. Drane tempt us to accept the fact of evil, learn to live with it, come to terms with it, maintain a discrete silence in the presence of it and to compromise evil for the sake of justice. For Mr. Drane, the ethics of abortion is obsolete and drowned in compassion and relativism. It’s the baby’s fault for just being there. They are willing to exchange the price of a baby for some temporary unattainable goal. For them, evil and justice have the same definition.
Proverbs 31:8 says to “speak up for those who cannot speak for themselves.” In the partial-birth abortion procedure, which Barack Obama supported, the doctor holds the baby’s feet while leaving the head inside the womb. Why not the other way around? It is so the mother and doctor cannot hear the baby’s cries.
For true Christians, the abortion issue is not complicated or difficult. Mr. Drane does not understand that believers in Christ include demons. (James 2:19) Though Mr. Drane and others who support abortion rights are believers in Christ, they still lack obedience, which is a necessary component of faith. And faith without obedience is a dead and useless faith. (James 2:20)
So, if you support politicians who support abortion rights, go ahead, call yourself a progressive, thoughtful, reasoning, mature, responsible, moral Catholic, Protestant, Democrat or Republican believer, but please, for Christ’s sake (no pun intended), don’t call yourself a Christian.
