Ruth Marjorie (Sabel) Hanes, 90, of 31 N. Park Ave., Meadville, formerly of Rochester, N.Y., passed away Tuesday, Jan. 29, 2013, at Wesbury United Methodist Community.
Ruth was born in Rochester, N.Y., on March 26, 1922, a daughter of the late Edward and Edna Steger Sabel.
On Aug. 29, 1979, Ruth married Charles Hanes, who preceded her in death.
She was an active member of Trinity Emmanuel Lutheran Church, Rochester, N.Y., where she served as the financial secretary, taught Sunday School and sang in the church choir.
After more than 30 years of service, Ruth retired in the mid-1970s from the former Rochester Telephone Co., now Frontier Corp. After retiring, she volunteered at Strong Memorial Hospital in Rochester for 20 years and made many dear friends among the nurses. She was an avid fan of the Rochester Amerks hockey team.
Ruth is survived by a sister, Margaret E. Gutzmer of Sarasota, Fla.; a niece, Susan Slote and her husband, Ben, of Meadville; a nephew, Paul Gutzmer and his wife, Laura, of Lakewood, N.Y.; three great-nieces, Audrey Slote, Megan and Lynsey Gutzmer; and a great-nephew, Joseph Slote.
She was preceded in death by her parents, and her husband, Charles.
A memorial service will be held March 23, 2013, at 11 a.m. at Trinity Emmanuel Lutheran Church, 761 Elmgrove Road, Rochester, N.Y., with Pastor David Gerhardt officiating.
